Herne Bay Assets and Adaptation Plan, 2023
Client: Canterbury City Council
Following the success of the Whitstable Assets and Adaptation Plan (see below), AJS undertook a sister study for Canterbury City Council's Herne Bay frontage.
The study analysed the climate change impacts to and necessary adaptation required to manage flood risk to ~1,000 residential and non-residential properties at risk of coastal flooding in Herne Bay, Kent over the next 100 years.
The study included analysis of beach geomorphology, wave overtopping, flood extent and depths, flood damages and a full economic appraisal of the costs and benefits of various different management options.

West Midlands Tree Supply Study, 2023
Client: West Midlands Combined Authority
We worked with West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) on a project looking to understand the regional tree market and advise on the most sustainable way to meet future demand for trees within the region.
We conducted stakeholder interviews including local authorities and tree nurseries, held an online workshop and conducted a thorough literature review. We have produced an in-depth case for investment outlining the tree supply options, focussing on maximising the overall societal benefit by considering secondary benefits of tree production such as skills and training, low carbon methods, and community engagement.
First Steps in Urban Water, 2023
Client: Trees and Design Action Group (TDAG)
We worked with Trees and Design Action Group (TDAG) to research sustainable water management, with a focus on urban areas and the role of trees. Combining our expertise in flood risk management with ecology and sustainable land management, we created a short concise guide to help built-environment professionals better understand what they should consider in urban (and rural) design to manage our water resources effectively.
The paper has been published by the University of Birmingham and is available here. We presented the findings at a TDAG webinar on the 15th November 2023 - available here.
Trees and Utilities Study, 2022-23
Clients: Kent County Council, (DEFRA)
AJS worked with Kent County Council (KCC) as part of a national DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) study looking into the interactions between urban trees and utilities. We designed and circulated surveys, conducted interviews and carried out a thorough literature review with the aim of identifying and overcoming barriers to retaining and establishing urban trees.
By building a robust evidence base of stakeholder knowledge and best practice solutions, our work will influence policy and practice in this area. Alongside a project report we have built a user-friendly excel-based system to house the research for future use. Our work has been endorsed by DEFRA, Forestry Commission (FC) and leading tree experts at TDAG (Trees and Design Action Group). We have presented this research to several audiences, including a TDAG webinar with over 200 built-environment professionals. The report can be downloaded in full here.
Whitstable Assets and Adaptation Plan, 2022-23
Client: Canterbury City Council
AJS Flood Risk Consulting undertook a comprehensive review of the climate change impacts to and necessary adaptation required to manage flood risk to ~2,600 residential and 500 non-residential properties at risk of coastal flooding in Whitstable, Kent over the next 100 years.
The study included analysis of beach geomorphology, wave overtopping, flood extent and depths, flood damages and a full economic appraisal of the costs and benefits of various different options.
Working closely with our client at Canterbury City Council to understand their needs, we developed a bespoke methodology for modelling wave overtopping that used advanced spreadsheet analysis to model risk from thousands of unique storm event and beach configuration scenarios. In total the computations were equivalent to 300 years of manual calculation (working 24/7 and 365 days a year with no mistakes!) and facilitated a detailed and accurate understanding of risk which allowed for a comprehensive options appraisal.

St Mildred's to Westbrook Seawall Greening Study, 2022
Client: Thanet District Council
AJS Flood Risk Consulting undertook a 'seawall greening' study on behalf of Thanet District Council. The study evaluated the available options for environmental enhancements of the seawall between St Mildreds Bay and Westbrook Bay in the district of Thanet, Kent and the corresponding economic benefits with regards to Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM).
The study made recommendations for environmental enhancements to the seawall and surrounding land and corresponding funding streams that could be developed alongside planned FCERM work, taking into account the environmental, hydrodynamic and socio-economic context of the site.
Fairmeadow Underpass Flood Protection Scheme Funding, 2022
Clients: Canterbury City Council, Maidstone Borough Council
We worked alongside engineers at Canterbury City Council to progress a flood alleviation scheme in Maidstone, Kent, on behalf of Maidstone Borough Council. The scheme will help to protect supported living accommodation and local businesses against flooding from the river Medway, and hopefully be a springboard for further investment and regeneration of the area.
AJS led on scheme funding and by working closely with the Environment Agency area programmes team successfully bid for and secured £150k of Flood Defence Grant in aid (FDGiA) and local levy with a tight turnaround.
Broadstairs Flood and Coast Protection Scheme Economic Appraisal, 2022
Client: Thanet District Council
We were approached by Thanet District Council (TDC) to undertake damage modelling and economic appraisal for a flood defence and coast protection scheme in Broadstairs, Kent. The project funding of ~£880k was time sensitive which meant a quick turnaround was essential.
We worked with Herrington Consulting and TDC engineers to get the project delivered, using our expertise to assist TDC through the business case review process to ensure a successful outcome.
Eastbourne Beach Management Returns, 2022
Client: Eastbourne Borough Council
We assisted Eastbourne Borough Council (EBC) in providing the Environment Agency with information on outcomes measures from the Eastbourne Beach Management 21-25 project. Staff from AJS have a great working relationship with EBC and in a previous role delivered the business case to secure £2M of funding for the works to go ahead.
Whitstable Beach Replenishment Outline Business Case, 2022
Client: Canterbury City Council
AJS Flood Risk Consulting assisted Canterbury City Council in the preparation of an Outline Business Case (OBC) which was successful in securing £500k of Flood Defence Grant in Aid (FDGiA) for a small beach replenishment in the town of Whitstable in Kent.
AJS worked on all aspects of the business case including beach change and overtopping analysis, flood and damage modelling, economic appraisal, environmental and carbon reporting and preparation of the Outline Business Case main report and all associated appendices.
