Adding value to every project
Welcome to the home of AJS Flood Risk Consulting Ltd.
We are a family run consultancy passionate about working with local authorities and others to turn ideas into reality, using our expertise to help ensure projects will be deliverable, attract funding and offer societal and environmental benefits.
Our main areas of specialisation are in project appraisal, research and development within Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM), and in tree related research projects. We can also undertake projects within the wider environmental, built environment and sustainability sectors.
We can work independently or alongside clients and other experts across the UK to add value to every project.
Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM)
We undertake all aspects of business case development to satisfy Environment Agency Flood Defence Grant in Aid (FDGiA) requirements from concept through to design; FCERM7 form to fund analysis and business case development; Beach evolution, overtopping and flood modelling1; Option development and appraisal; Damage modelling and economic appraisal; Carbon calculations; Environmental reports; Outline Business Case report and associated appendices; Partnership funding calculator and FCERM forms.
We will advise on where FCERM work can deliver multiple benefits including biodiversity net gain, environmental enhancement and wider societal benefits.
We undertake Local Levy bids to seek funding from Regional Flood and Coastal Committees (RFCCs), whether for 'top up' funding to FDGiA bids, or for smaller stand alone projects. We can manage the whole process including liaising with the RFCC and submitting/presenting the bid.
We offer project management and technical assistance to those planning beach management operations or other coastal works, and for Natural Flood Management works whether coastal or inland. We can liaise with external bodies and stakeholders and undertake planning, marine licence or environmental permit applications.
1Beach analysis, overtopping and simple flood models are done in house. For complex flood models we work with partners.
Green finance and business case development
We have staff with Practitioner level qualifications in Better Business Cases for the government standard 5 case business model. We can undertake business cases within the environmental, built environment and sustainability sectors to help shape projects and to justify investment.
We can prepare business cases to suit internal or external requirements and formats, ensuring that best practice is used to inform better decision making at every stage of the project lifecycle from feasibility studies through to detailed design.
For funding bids we will engage with funding bodies to ensure the business case is as a robust as possible and to maximise the chance of attracting funding. We can also advise on possible alternative or complementary funding streams for projects.
Research and studies
We can use our academic and practical knowledge and experience to undertake desk based research projects or literature reviews in FCERM, natural flood management, tree planting, environmental or related areas, or provide an independent review of existing research or studies.
Our staff have experience authoring peer reviewed journal papers, technical reports and presenting findings at international conferences. For FCERM research for Risk Management Authorities we can seek FCERM7 study funding or local levy on your behalf where appropriate to fund the work.
Bespoke Tool Development
We have a wealth of experience in developing spreadsheet (Office or Google) or GIS (desktop or online) based tools to improve performance, whether within FCERM or related fields.
We work with clients to understand your needs and develop tools that will integrate with existing processes to increase productivity and make the best use of the data available.
Tools to date have included project and programme management (including financial review with integrated visuals and reporting); emergency planning (tide surge predictions; floodgate closures; interactive asset maps); survey and tidal works planning; beach analysis; damage modelling and more.
